What happened?
Before Adrio Romine’s passing, Adrio had been speaking to a person on Reddit who gave him instructions on “how to take his own life by suicide.” Adrio had continued to dialogue with this adult for about 40 days. The predator was aware that Adrio was a minor at 17.
Getting Justice for a New Crime with No Law
Adrio's mother spoke with four (4) law enforcement agencies (Klamath Falls Sheriff (OR), Freemont Police (CA), Chandler Police (AZ) and Cyber Crimes at the FBI).
Adrio's mother provided over 300+ screenshots of these conversations to the Police, to which they stated, “They have not found any evidence of bullying or coercion." All four (4) agencies said to Paolla Jordan "Talk to your lawmakers. Our hands are tied and there is no law on the books that will allow us to arrest the adult."
There was no law in the United States that prohibited an adult from instructing a minor on how to complete suicide. It is against the law in eight (8) other countries, which include the European Union. The State of Arizona has the first Law in the United States making it Manslaughter to instruct a minor about how to die by suicide.
Paolla Jordan (Adrio’s Mom), worked hard for two years (2020-2021) to get legislation passed. It was Mrs. Jordan’s motivation to have a law in place so that another family can get justice should another family experience a tragedy like the Jordan Family. Mrs. Jordan does not want another family to be a “member” of her club. “Pursuing the legislation was difficult, but a change in legislation needed to happen” says Mrs. Jordan.
Jeff Weninger Sponsor of HB2459
Mrs. Jordan worked with Representative Jeff Weninger (Sponsor of bill HB2459) of Arizona to amend the manslaughter law. Mr. Weninger was very passionate about keeping children safe in Arizona. HB2459 would make instructing a minor child about dying by suicide guilty of a class 2 felony in Arizona. Everyone in the House of Representatives and the Senate Committee worked together on this bill to protect vulnerable children.
